How to Hang Your Mini Hoop Without Damaging the Door

How to Hang Your Mini Hoop Without Damaging the Door

Hi, I’m River!

I’m 11 and I started Hoops for Good because I love basketball—and I wanted to help other kids play too.

If you just got your mini basketball hoop, here’s how to set it up so it stays in place, works properly, and doesn’t wreck your bedroom door (very important if you want to keep playing...).

What You Need

  • Your mini hoop (mine comes with hooks)
  • A door that closes flat (like your bedroom or study door)
  • A soft ball (like the one that comes with the hoop—not a full-size basketball!)
  • Maybe a towel or thin foam sheet (see tip below)

How to Hang It (The Right Way)

  1. Use the over-the-door hooks
The hooks should slide over the top of the door. Make sure they sit flat so the door can still close. Ask someone to hold the hoop while you open and close the door gently to test it.
  2. Centre the hoop
Put the hoop right in the middle of the door so you have space to shoot from either side.
  3. Protect the door (optional)
If you’re worried about scratches, you can put a thin towel or foam pad behind the hooks where they touch the door. It helps stop rubbing or marks.
  4. Use the soft ball only
The ball that comes with your hoop is made for indoor play. Don’t use a real basketball (it’s too heavy and could damage the hoop or the door).

Extra Tips from Me

  • Don’t hang on the hoop. It looks cool in the NBA but it’s not made for that.
  • If the hoop moves when you shoot, try adding a little Blu Tack or double-sided tape to stop it wobbling.
  • If you’ve got a really thick door, measure it first to check the hooks will fit.

Need a Hoop?

You can grab one from the Hoops for Good shop. It comes with everything you need to start playing—and $10 from every hoop sold goes to help kids through basketball programs.
